Soak up the late summer sun with your friends and settle in for an afternoon picnic after hitting the shops on Oxford Street. From cute supplies, to the best places to grab your picky-bits and the spots to set up camp – we’ve got you covered.
The supplies
Set the scene with our round up of top picnic supplies including the aesthetic pieces – a picnic blanket and classic wicker basket – as well as the practical items such as plastic plates, cutlery and glasses. And it isn’t a picnic unless there are some garden games involved…
Where to grab your picky-bits
When it comes to picnics, the supermarkets are a great option for tasty picky-bits. M&S has an extensive summer line-up of food with 3 for £8 on a range of picnic staples such as sausage rolls, pork pies and olives. Their range of dips and crisps are not to be missed too! Waitrose, in the basement of John Lewis, also offers delicious seasonal flavours such as their moorish Roasted Garlic Aioli with Lemon & Parsley or the Mini Cornish Pasties – both crowd pleasers.
Pick your spot
With plenty of green spaces nearby, take your pick of sophisticated squares or sprawling open spaces. If you’re looking for a pretty setting, look no further than Brown Hart Gardens, a grade II listed raised terrace garden just south of Oxford Street with plenty of benches and even some sun loungers. Hanover Square has recently been given a refresh and offers a central lawn or stylish bench seating and is conveniently located a stones throw from Waitrose. Other smaller squares include Soho Square towards Tottenham Court Road or Cavendish Square just behind John Lewis – which is currently hosting Underbelly festival.
For larger spaces, Hyde Park at the Marble Arch end of Oxford Street is good for large gatherings and is ideally located for M&S Food. Grosvenor Square in Mayfair boasts plenty of trees for shade bathers and ample grass space to spread out.
